Why Keep To Your Left?

People often ask why. Why do I need to keep to my left? If I don’t,  what will happen?

SImple answer really. It’s as simple as logic. Let me put it into perspective…

Logic is allowing people to alight from the train before you board it.

Logic is allowing people to exit the elevator before you enter it.

Logic is wiping down your own sweat at the gym after you have finished using the equipment.

Logic is keeping to one side of the escalator for people who want to stand, leaving space for others to continue walking. Newsflash: not everyone wants to be a lazy prick by standing and enjoying the ride.

You are not bound by law to keep to your left as there are no real consequences. Just like the examples listed above, they are also not bound by law. However, it is common courtesy and common sense to do these things out of human kindness. So what do you get out of doing these things? Instead of simply being human, you become a human being.

Hope that clears things up a bit.

Keep to your left Sydneysiders.

Escalator Offender #3 – The Shopaholic

6608758-shopping-woman-smiling-on-the-escalators-at-a-mall

“The Shopaholic” offender is normally found on the escalators in shopping centres (surprise surprise). A shopaholic offender is someone who places  their shopping bags and other various items on the ground beside them on the escalator and as a result, block the way for others.

We understand you’ve had a long, hard day deciding which mascara to buy, or spending hours looking for that perfect peplum top, or purchasing 7 different pairs of shoes from different stores. However, that is no excuse for you to prohibit the movement of people who want to overtake your unnecessary excessive consumption of space.

If you decide to be lazy and place your shopping bags on the ground for 10 seconds, do so behind or in front of you. NOT ON YOUR RIGHT. You have been warned.

Escalator Offender #2 – The Blocker

“The Blocker” is someone who deliberately stands at the centre of the escalator and decides to stand for the entire duration of the ride.  They are also found in all areas and are probably the most common offenders of escalator etiquette.

As these selfish and ignorant users take the escalator, they stand right in the middle and think as if they own the place. This means there is no space on the left or the right for people to move up/down the escalator as the offender is blocking the way.

You would have to be mentally impaired to block the way on the escalator as it as simple as common sense that people, yes human beings such as yourself, need to get to places sometimes (all the time) and with you blocking the way like the uncivilised human being that you are, please step aside and keep to your left.

I’m sure we’ve all done this at some point in our lives whether it was intentionally or unintentionally, you still have the ability to repent for your sins. Remember this, spread the word, share our blog and follow us on Facebook and Twitter for more posts like these and reminders to keep to your left.

Escalator Offender #1 – The Couple

“The Couple” involves two people who are usually involved in a relationship. They can be found in all areas, and have a natural tendency to break the rules of escalator etiquette.

Firstly, let’s be clear that we do not have a problem with couples putting on a show of their public displays of affection. Just kidding, of course we have a problem with that. But the real problem here is when couples decide to stand side by side on an escalator. Just because you are in a relationship, does not offer you any special privileges on the escalator. You are the same as everyone else, meaning you follow the rules like everyone else.

Sorry to interrupt your romantic moments on the escalator but people have places to go and if you are blocking the entire width of the escalator with your bodies, you are selfish, disrespectful, and quite frankly, rude.

Seriously, keep to your left.

Surprise surprise, you will still be within hand-holding and kissing distance of your partner if you both keep to the left.

This is how it’s done:

Ladies and gentlemen, this photo was taken this morning at Town Hall train station, Sydney, 7:45 am.

This is escalator etiquette being showcased at it’s best. As you can see, the people on the left line up in an orderly fashion as they wish to stand on the escalator. The people on the right continue walking up the escalator and everyone’s a happy trooper.

The 411 on Escalator Etiquette

Hope everyone used their time productively this long weekend! Whether it was to catch up on some work or simply take a break from the daily grind, we hope you’re refreshed for a brand new week.

I’ve had some questions over the long weekend about the concept of escalator etiquette, so this post’s objective is to outline the different possible situations one can face in any scencario.

The protocols for escalator etiquette are as follows:

  • If the escalator is empty and there are no other approaching human beings, you have free reign. Whether you decide to stand or walk, keep to your left nonetheless.
  • If someone is already standing on the left and you decide to stand too, stand behind them on your left.
  • If you wish to walk up/down the escalators, do so on your right.
  • When walking up/down the escalator (on your right), if you are the person at the front and there is no one standing on the left, proceed to your left and continue walking to respect others who are walking up to continue at their own pace.
  • As a general rule regarding personal space on crowded escalators, always keep a minimum one-step behind the person in front of you whether you decide to stand or walk.

Hopefully this clarifies the name and intention of this campaign and betters everyones understanding of escalator etiquette. Now, with this knowledge, you may go forth and be good human beings!

Did you know?

DID YOU KNOW keeping to your left does not only apply to escalators and stairs?

As a standard road rule, drivers should keep to their left in multiple-lane roads and only use the right lane for the purposes of overtaking.

Keeping to your left also applies to general walkways, pathways and entrances to rooms and buildings.

To avoid collisions, awkward confrontations, and even etiquette extremists who will pass judgement and condemn you for not keeping to your left, just simply: keep to your left.

keep-left

Imagine a world that adhered to this protocol. We would be one step closer to peace and world order.

A New Week

It’s Monday and that means it’s the beginning of a new week!

Don’t forget people, on your way to work or university today, please remember to keep to your left when taking the stairs or the escalators. Especially during peak hour, things can get quite messy with people rushing to get to work on time.

This rainy weather doesn’t help the mood either! Hope everyone has a fantastic day.
